The Swedish Academy will announce the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature in Stockholm on Thursday, October 8, at 1:00 p.m. local time. The prize carries an award of 12 million Swedish kronor and will be presented on December 10.
As always, the Academy keeps its deliberations secret and releases no shortlist. Nominations remain sealed for fifty years.
The names in the air
Betting markets have listed the Chinese avant-garde novelist Can Xue, Japan’s Haruki Murakami, the Australian writer Gerald Murnane and the American novelist Thomas Pynchon among the favourites — though the Academy has a long record of confounding predictions.
