The Northstar is an independent publication covering books, writers and publishing: a daily newspaper, a monthly magazine and a growing archive of written interviews.
We started The Northstar because the literary world deserved the attention usually reserved for politics and finance: rigorous reporting, careful editing and a sense of occasion.
Our newspaper desk files daily on publishing, prizes, festivals and the industry. Our magazine gathers each month around a single theme. Our interviews give writers room to think out loud, at length.
We are read by novelists, editors, booksellers, students and anyone who has ever finished a book and wanted to talk about it.
What We Believe
Writers first
We cover literature from the desk outward. The work, and the people who make it, come before the market around it.
Time to read
Our interviews are written, not transcribed. Our essays are edited for the page. We would rather be late and right.
Verified only
We publish news drawn from named, trusted sources, and we correct the record when we get something wrong.
Independent
The Northstar accepts no payment for coverage. Reviews and features are commissioned by our editors alone.
